Police Care UK makes sure both serving and former colleagues who suffer harm through their policing role, and their families, have someone to turn to when things get tough. It is the charity for all policing, providing support that is confidential, independent and accessible. It’s independent of the police service and government – funded entirely by donations.

Ill Health Retirement Commitment
We know from responses to the Injury on Duty research published by Police Care UK that police veterans who go through ill health retirement have found getting the support they need difficult or non-existent. Respondents talked extensively about not getting the chance to fulfil their vocation whilst others talked about the lengthy assessment and decision-making process that had left them feeling isolated, vulnerable, and staring into the unknown. In response to these challenges, we are delighted to be launching our new Ill Health Retirement Commitment.
What is the Ill Health Retirement Commitment
This guidance document is designed to be used as a tool to enable police forces across the UK to better support their employees going through this difficult process. We acted on the concerns of those who came to us for help and have since worked with police forces, our beneficiaries who have experienced ill health retirement, our Peer Support Volunteers and a variety of other police organisations to ensure we encapsulate all the experiences and thinking behind ill-health retirement and injury on duty. This has allowed us to produce a document that we hope will allow the police service to better support their staff and their families.
